YWCA Carlisle: Outreach Counselor/Advocate

Position:         Outreach Counselor/Advocate

Reports to:     Program Director

Primary responsibilities:  Primary responsibilities: Provides counseling and support services to adult and child victims of sexual assault and their significant others.  Performs community outreach through contacts with medical and mental health providers, colleges, human service organizations, and the general community.  Promotes general knowledge of the issues of sexual assault throughout the county with the purpose of identifying victims who may be in need of services.  Presents school-based and community prevention education programs.

  1. Provides supportive counseling and advocacy services to adult and child victims of sexual assault and their significant others.  Co-facilitates support groups as needed.
  2. Presents school-based and community prevention education programs when Prevention Education Coordinator is unavailable or needs assistance.  May design prevention programs to meet specific agency requests.  Remains current with new prevention strategies in the anti-sexual violence movement.
  3. Participates in community outreach and awareness activities and collaborates with other agencies in carrying out these activities.
  4. Provides hotline back-up shifts on a regular, rotating basis.
  5. Acts as a resource to other staff, interns, and volunteers in their work with victims. 
  6. Required to take 40 hours of training mandated by PCAR.
  7. Maintains accurate records according to standards of funding sources and submits statistical information and reports as required. 
  8. Maintains strict standards of confidentiality of clients at all times, meeting PCAR   standards.
  9. Participates in staff meetings and plans and assists in Association events as required. 
  10. Attends various meetings and conferences and networks with community agencies.
  11. Flexible schedule required – likely to work one-to-two evenings per week with occasional weekend hours.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in social work or related field or related work/volunteer experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in presenting to groups.
  • Ability to provide current, acceptable clearances (Criminal, Child Abuse, FBI) in               accordance with YWCA policies.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License and willingness to travel as needed for the position.
  • Commitment to serving all clients in a manner which facilitates healing and empowerment.
  • Experience with counseling a plus. 
  • Has or acquires basic knowledge of YWCA computer system. (Windows, Microsoft Office)
