Part of the Brave Conversations: Building Skills for Connection, Conflict, and Change Series.
This two-day training (August 25th and 27th) offers a practical and compassionate deeper dive into Nonviolent Communication (NVC), tailored for advocates and prevention educators working in rape crisis centers. Participants will begin by exploring the intention behind using NVC as a language for mediation and connection. Through interactive exercises, we’ll learn how to distinguish observations from evaluations which is an essential skill for reducing defensiveness and building trust. We’ll also deepen our understanding of feelings and needs, recognizing how language can unintentionally obscure our intentions, especially when words like “betrayed” carry hidden judgments.
The training will also introduce the practice of making SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) Requests. When we’re clear about our needs, making grounded, attainable requests can help repair harm, prevent future misunderstandings, and support more effective advocacy. Throughout the training, we’ll use real-life examples and explore how these NVC principles can strengthen survivor support, team communication, and prevention programming. Participants will leave with tools to engage with others more intentionally; whether in moments of conflict, connection, or change.
