The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) are combining their expertise and resources to work with Penn State University to focus on preventing sexual violence. As part of this three-year partnership, Penn State has pledged $1.5 million to facilitate these efforts.
“We are pleased to provide expertise to Penn State,” said Delilah Rumburg, Chief Executive Officer of PCAR and NSVRC. “We value their pledge to support efforts in prevention, advocacy, education, and treatment. Our mutual goal is to create lasting and impactful change in the University community, as well as across the country. This is a unique opportunity to work together to end sexual violence.”
Penn State has gained national attention in the wake of child sexual abuse allegations involving former football coach Jerry Sandusky, because of the extent of the alleged crimes and allegations that community leaders did not take appropriate actions when informed.
“This case is not unique,” said Rumburg. “We know that adults see or hear things that make them uncomfortable, or may even have a child disclose sexual abuse, but they don’t get involved. We want to prevent abuse by equipping people with information, skills and resources.”
Though sexual violence happens every day throughout the world, the majority of sexual assault cases go unreported. Annually in Pennsylvania, more than 30,000 adults and children receive sexual assault services. The Sandusky case heightened awareness and reporting. The PA Department of Public Welfare reported more than 4,800 reports of suspected abuse the week following Sandusky’s Nov. 5 charge — an average week garners roughly 2,300 reports.
The collaboration with Penn State comes at a crucial time. Thousands need access to information and resources. Funding for PCAR’s network of 51 rape crisis centers has decreased since the 2001-02 fiscal year. These cuts have placed additional strain on already-limited resources.
In addition to Penn State's pledge, individuals can support local rape crisis centers. For a list of local centers or information, visit PCAR and NSVRC online at www.pcar.org and www.nsvrc.org.
The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) is the oldest anti-sexual violence coalition in the United States. PCAR represents 51 sexual assault centers that serve victims in the state’s 67 counties. Each year these centers provide confidential services, at no charge, to more than 30,000 men, women and children affected by sexual abuse.Founded by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape in 2000, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) identifies, develops and disseminates resources regarding all aspects of sexual violence prevention and intervention. NSVRC activities include training and technical assistance, referrals, consultation, systems advocacy, coordinating Sexual Assault Awareness Month and other national events.
