HARRISBURG—Governor Tom Wolf’s proposed budget includes a 10 percent increase for rape crisis services in Pennsylvania, bringing the total funding for 2015-16 to $9,639,000.
The increase would help to fortify the services of PCAR and the network of 50 rape crisis centers that provide services to citizens impacted by sexual assault across Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.
Pennsylvania’s rape crisis centers serve approximately 30K women, men and children affected by sexual assault each year across the Commonwealth and provide prevention education to adults, teens and children in schools, churches, civic groups and other settings.
“Gov. Wolf’s proposed budget shows a powerful commitment to victims of sexual assault,” PCAR CEO Delilah Rumburg said. “This is a clear statement that the governor values the help and healing provided by rape crisis centers and needed by so many Pennsylvanians. We thank Gov. Wolf for recognizing the value and need for rape crisis services with this proposal.”
Additional funding for rape crisis programs would assist all 50 rape crisis centers in the provision of services such as a 24/7 hotline, support and counseling to victims and their families; accompaniment to the police, hospital or court appointments; and prevention education in the community.
Domestic violence programs would also see a $1.5 million increase in state funding under the governor’s plan.
Founded in 1975, PCAR works to end sexual violence and advocates for the rights and needs of sexual assault victims. PCAR partners with a network of rape crisis programs to bring help, hope and healing around issues of sexual violence to the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
