Working with Male Survivors | Trabajando con hombres sobrevivientes

Summary

Though one in six boys will be victims of sexual violence by age 18, many of these survivors are not aware of services available to them or how to access these services. This webinar will identify some of the barriers adult male survivors of sexual abuse face and how victim service agencies can overcome these barriers. The barriers presented by programs and by individual counselors bias and/or misconceptions will be discussed. Experience of the presenter has shown that outreach efforts have increased referral for services. The presenter will identify those systems which may already be serving or interacting with male survivors within their client populations and how to engage them in order to reach those men. She will share experiences in how to best serve male clients both in individual counseling and support group settings.

Resumen

Aunque uno de cada seis ninos sera victima de violencia sexual a los 18 anos, muchos de estos sobrevivientes no conocen los servicios disponibles o como acceder a ellos. Este seminario web identificara algunas de las barreras que enfrentan los hombres adultos sobrevivientes de abuso sexual y como las agencias de servicio a las victimas pueden superar estas barreras. Se discutiran las barreras que presentan los programas y los prejuicios y/o conceptos erroneos de los consejeros individuales. La experiencia del presentador ha demostrado que los esfuerzos de difusion han aumentado la referencia para los servicios. El presentador identificara aquellos sistemas que pueden estar sirviendo o interactuando con sobrevivientes masculinos dentro de sus poblaciones de clientes y como involucrarlos para llegar a esos hombres. Ella compartira experiencias sobre la mejor manera de servir a los clientes masculinos, tanto en asesoramiento individual como en grupos de apoyo.
